Dad, Successful Project, Linchpin, PASS Summit 2015

Apologies for the lack of updates recently. Work and life picked up so I haven’t had as much time for blogging. But not to worry, plenty of content coming down the pipeline.

Life

I’m a dad! Well, sorta. My wife and I decided to “rescue” a baby golden retriever from a local breeder. His official name is James Murphy after the singer-songwriter from one of our favorite music groups. He goes by a few names: Murphy, Murph, Murph-Dog, and occasionally Monster (mostly used during the first few weeks when we had to keep a constant eye on him).

Pics or it didn’t happen, right?

Here’s Murph w/ his buddies Baxter and Archie at ~11 weeks…

Below is a picture of him (right) with his cousin Eddie (left). He’s putting on a few pounds each week and will eventually 80-90lbs once fully grown!

Work

There have been a whirlwind of changes on the work-front this summer. Below are a few of the highlights:

Successful Release!
In May I took over a project that had started slipping and was in danger of missing the deadline. The budget had already been blown and I was there to get it over the finish line as quickly as possible. The situation was pretty awkward at first as I had to work with the original developers who were essentially being rolled off once the transition was over. Despite running into a few setbacks (read: serious scalability issues w/ the initial design) we made it into production and I’ve been asked to return later in the fall when they’re ready to begin Phase 2.

Linchpin People

Early on in the summer, at SQL Saturday Atlanta, I attended a great pre-con led by Brian Moran called Secrets of Independent Consulting. There was a ton of good information in that session. If only I’d known this stuff when I was first starting out as an independent! After the session, Brian and I started chatting about some of the obstacles facing independents and Linchpin People came up. I recognized the name, but didn’t really have a good understanding of the model. Well, one thing led to another and after a few more conversations w/ some of the partners at Linchpin, I was asked to come on as a teammate. It was a pretty easy decision for a number of reasons (if you’re interested in the details, just ask and I’ll share what I can) and so far everything is falling into place very nicely. Suffice it to say, this should be an exciting year for everyone!

PASS Summit 2015
Probably the biggest news for me on the community front is that one of my sessions was selected for the super bowl of SQL Server conferences: PASS Summit 2015. This will be my first presentation at the national level and I’m freaking stoked! I’ve never felt so passionate about a topic and I think that shines through in this session. So if you’re going to be in Seattle for PASS Summit 2015 *and* you think Analysis Services kicks ass…then you’ll want to check out my session:

Now, in the words of 2 of hip hop’s pioneers sit back, relax, put on your head gear … and your regularly scheduled data geek’ry will resume shortly.
